Trim and weighting workshop in a twinset

Course description

LevelUP! Tec Diver is a one day workshop for twinset divers who want to check their trim and weighting before their next technical course or after a break. Two cylinders and a stage shift your centre of gravity: the legs drop and the position slips during a gas switch. We take the configuration apart on land, set it up in the water and record every session.

The day has the same three parts as the other levels: position, buoyancy control with breathing, and propulsion techniques. On top of that come choosing a wing for the twinset, routing the long hose and SPG, the stage cylinder and valve drills. All dives stay within no decompression limits, down to 9 m.

Sign up before PADI Tec 40, after a change of configuration (a new wing, moving from a wetsuit to a drysuit) or after a longer break from technical diving.

Key information

1 day.

3 parts: position, buoyancy control and breathing, propulsion techniques. Each part has a short presentation, a drill on the mat, a water session and video analysis.

3 water sessions of about 60 minutes each, down to 9 m, with no required decompression.

Maximum 2 people per instructor. A private 1:1 option is possible.

Air or Nitrox according to your certification. No decompression planning.

  • Recordings of every session,
  • Twinset and stage configuration set up for you,
  • Hovering in full configuration within 0.5 m,
  • A list of 2 to 4 priorities before your next course.

  • Minimum age 18.
  • PADI Tec Basics or an equivalent certification, or experience diving a twinset.
  • A current medical statement.
  • The workshop does not qualify you for technical dives.

Instruments and safety equipment

Dive computer, backup depth gauge and timer, buoy with spool, spare mask, cutting tool.

Thermal protection

A drysuit with an undersuit is recommended.

Also recommended

Wet notes. If you do not have a stage cylinder, we will provide one for the workshop.

Theory

  • Position, buoyancy control and propulsion in a technical configuration.
  • Choosing a wing for a twinset: the minimum bladder volume is twice the weight of the gas in the cylinders plus a 30% margin.
  • Weight distribution in a twinset and how a stage cylinder affects trim.
  • How the routing of the long hose, SPG and accessories affects position.
  • Adjusting the regulators and how they affect breathing and gas consumption.
  • The mechanics of the frog kick, modified frog kick, back kick and helicopter turn in full configuration.

Practice

  • Trim and hovering in full configuration, weight correction on the recording.
  • Buoyancy window on a line with markers every 0.5 m, control by breathing only.
  • Hovering with a stage cylinder.
  • Valve drills and gas sharing without losing position.
  • Frog kick, modified frog kick, flutter kick, back kick and helicopter turn.
  • Depth changes of 6, 3, 6, 9 and 6 m with a one minute hover at each stop.
  • Clipping and unclipping a stage cylinder without changing depth.

We assess progress on the recordings: what counts is a repeatable position in full configuration. Decompression planning is not part of the programme. We cover it on the Tec 40 and higher courses.
